A Mission Entrusted To All
Fr. Jacob Nampudakam SAC, Pallottine Rector General
“We Are A Mission” is a title inspired by these words of Pope Francis: (Evangelii Gaudium n.273):
“My mission of being in the heart of the people is not just a part of my life or a badge I can take off; it is not an “extra” or just another moment in life. Instead, it is something I cannot uproot from my being without destroying my very self. I am a mission on this earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world. We have to regard ourselves as sealed, even branded, by this mission of bringing light, blessing, enlivening, raising up, healing and freeing. All around us we begin to see nurses with soul, teachers with soul, politicians with soul, people who have chosen deep down to be with others and for others. But once we separate our work from our private lives, everything turns grey and we will always be seeking recognition or asserting our needs. We stop being a people.”
Hence mission is something rooted in my very being as a Christian, a human, a Pallottine. For all of us, life itself is a mission; it means doing every work from the soul, reciprocating the love received, and sending forth the graces that the Lord has granted us. As our founder St. Vincent Pallotti said, the very life of Jesus was his apostolate; the only example we are called to follow.
As individual persons, Christians and Pallottines, it is also correct to say “We Are A Mission;" because it is in, and as, a community where our mission can be realized most effectively. No one is excluded from this call; the Christian world “is a mission for all. It requires great generosity and in particular the gaze and heart turned heavenward to invoke the Lord’s help.” (Pope Francis)
This website, a personal initiative- with help from numerous other persons- will revolve around the person and works of St. Vincent Pallotti; a man who tried to live his mission personally and through his spiritual sons and daughters worldwide.
Pallotti was so greatly transformed into the life of Jesus, that he himself was harmonized with the mission of God’s only Son; the Apostle of the Eternal Father. In praying and meditating over our saint’s life, we can courageously open our hearts to receive the Holy Spirit’s missionary flame. When we accept this grace together, it also enlivens Pallotti’s core beliefs of communion and collaboration: We Are A Mission.
To live the Gospel radically requires great bravery, and puts us swimming against the current of modern society. Yet by Pallotti’s adventurous children sharing their missionary and apostolate mandate, all of us can be inspired to answer the knock from God on our heart, calling us to take His hand into beauty not yet seen. In having the rare privilege to know the Pallottine world present in as many as 56 countries, I hope to find and share with you these personal testimonies from earth’s peripheries; where the treasures of our Church reside.
I would also like to use this website as a way to preserve the memory of our young confrere, Fr. Jean Betrand Etoundi, General Consultor and Mission Secretary, who passed away suddenly on 27 April 2018. In his short life, he nurtured so many dreams, and was filled to the brim with missionary joy. At the moment of his death, the second edition of his dream project, “Faith and Charity,” was ready for publication. Dear brother, may this be a way to keep your spirit with us.
I hope and pray this humble initiative will be another drop in the ocean, enlivening us all to live the Gospel with the very joy and passion that Pope Francis so often challenges us to do. Simultaneously, may it help us to love evermore our founder, St. Vincent Pallotti: mystic, apostle, and prophet of communion. We Are A Mission is a universal invitation to realize our vocation to be missionary disciples of Jesus through the spirituality and charism of Pallotti. May we abandon ourselves fully to the Lord, allowing Him to lighten our step, doing everything with the soul of “Jesus,” Apostle of the Father; infinite in love and mercy.
We Are A Mission: sempre avanti con Dio! Always going forth with God!
